The Girls Soccer Showcase took place July 7-10 at Veterans Field Complex in Waltham.

Thursday, July 7

Game 1

Southeast - 2

Coastal - 0


Girls Soccer kicked off with our eventful weekend at Veterans Field in Waltham. The first game included Coastal and Southeast. With 5 minutes left in the first half, Southeast's Sarah Duran (Hull, Hull HS) put Southeast on the board to take a 1-0 lead. There were multiple shots on net with Coastal fighting to stay in the game, but Southeast's Elly Thomas (Hull, Hull HS) scored to secure the 2-0 Southeast win.

 

Game 2

West - 7

Metro/Northeast - 1


In the second game of the showcase the West team came out looking strong, led by the incoming freshman, Hannah Murphy (Monson, Monson HS). The strong forward trio of Murphy, who scored 4 goals, Jordan Balint (South Hadley, South Hadley HS) who tallied 2 goals, and Lauren Marjanski (South Hadley, South Hadley HS) who added 1 gave West the 7-1 win over Metro/Northeast.


Game 3

Southeast - 0

West - 3


The two 1-0 teams faced off in a hard fought match. West’s Hannah Murphy (Monson, Monson HS) who was coming off a strong game, did not let up. Murphy scored all 3 goals in West's 3-0 win over Southeast.


Game 4

Central - 0

Coastal - 2


To wrap up day 1, Central took on Coastal. The game began with back to back shots on net from both teams. Then with 4 minutes left in the first half Coastal's Liza Pinette (Acushnet, Fairhaven HS) scored off a beautiful assist from Amilia Dias (Fall River, BMC Durfee HS). Central fought back in the second half looking for an equalizer, but Catia Fernandes (Acushnet, Fairhaven HS) found the back of the net to secure Coastal a 2-0 win over Central. 


Friday, July 8
Game 5

Southeast - 4

Metro/Northeast - 3


In a tight battle until the end, Southeast went up 4-3 with less than 10 minutes remaining thanks to a goal from Elly Thomas (Hull, Hull HS), her second of the game. Sarah Duran (Hull, Hull HS) and Fallon Ryan (Hull, Hull HS) each added a goal and Kate McLaughlin (Sharon, Noble & Greenough School) had 3 assists as Southeast got the 4-3 win. For Metro/Northeast, Grace Fitzgerald (Beverly, Beverly HS) scored 2 goals and Claire Marie Bortolotto (West Roxbury, Boston Collegiate Charter School) scored 1. 


Game 6

Coastal - 0

West - 3


West looking to remain undefeated, shutout Coastal 3-0. Goals from Lauren Marjanski (South Hadley, South Hadley HS), Hannah Murphy (Monson, Monson HS), and Gianna Sakowski (Springfield, Minnechaug Regional HS) helped West prevail as they moved to 3-0.


Game 7

Central - 3

Metro/Northeast - 2


With 8 minutes left in a 2-2 match, Tia Tollis (East Longmeadow, East Longmeadow HS) scored to give Central a 3-2 lead. Central hung on to defeat Metro/Northeast. Allison Fleury (South Hadley, South Hadley HS) and Emma Sousa (East Longmeadow, East Longmeadow HS) added goals for Central, while Grace Fitzgerald (Beverly, Beverly HS) and Claire Marie Bortolotto (West Roxbury, Boston Collegiate Charter School) scored for Metro/Northeast. 


Saturday, July 9
Game 8

Central - 1

West - 1


In a low scoring game, Lauren Marjanski (South Hadley, South Hadley HS) got West off to an early 1-0 lead when she scored 3 minutes into the game. Allison Fleury (South Hadley, South Hadley HS) got it tied 1-1 4:21 left in the first half. The score remained the same and finished tied.



Game 9

Metro/Northeast - 0

Coastal - 4


Coastal started early and kept piling on as they won 4-0. Avianna Andrade (North Dartmouth, Dartmouth HS) had 2 goals and Liza Pinette (Dartmouth, Dartmouth HS) and Zoey Silvester (Fall River, BMC Durfee HS) added one each as Coastal shutout Metro/Northeast and clinched a spot in the bronze medal game. Metro/Northeast's tournament came to end, but they were awarded the Sportsmanship Award presented by DICK'S Sporting Goods for displaying excellent sportsmanship throughout the tournament.


Game 10

Central - 0

Southeast - 2


In the final round robin game of the tournament, Southeast scored 2 second half goals to beat Central 2-0 and advance to the gold medal game. Elly Thomas (Hull, Hull HS) and Greta McEvoy (Milton, Fontbonne Academy) had the goals with Kate McLaughlin (Sharon, Noble & Greenough School) had both assists. Central moved on to the bronze medal game. 


Sunday, July 10
Game 11: Bronze Medal Game

Coastal - 3

Central - 0


Coastal came out early with a goal in the 7th minute of the game by Catia Fernandes (Acushnet, Fairhaven HS). Central fought back to try and tie up the game, but Coastal's Avianna Andrade (North Dartmouth, Dartmouth HS) and Alexia Rodriguez (New Bedford, New Bedford HS) each scored to secure the Bronze medal for Coastal.


Game 12: Gold Medal Game

Southeast - 3

West - 0


West came in hoping to finish the tournament with a perfect record, and Southeast was looking for a revenge win. The first half was an exciting one with shots on net from both sides. The first half ended with a 0-0 score. Both teams came out of half time with one thought in mind, going home with a gold medal. Southeast’s Kate McLaughlin (Sharon, Noble & Greenough HS) scored 8 minutes into the half off of an assist from Dani Lomuscio (Wrentham, King Philip Regional HS). West fought back, but Southeast hit the back of the net two more times to win the gold medal. West won the silver medal.

WOBURN (November 15, 2024) – The Bay State Games has selected six statewide scholarship recipients for the 2024 Future Leaders Scholarship Program. These student-athletes were selected from a large applicant pool after a process that included committee reviews of all applications and virtual interviews with selected applicants. These future leaders were selected based on their achievements and involvement in academics, community service, athletics, and leadership roles. The Bay State Games Future Leaders Scholarship program was established in 1989 and has since distributed nearly $400,000 in financial aid. Each of these high school seniors will receive a $1,000 scholarship for their first year of college. “Since its inception in 1989, the Future Leaders Scholarship Program has recognized outstanding high school students that excel in the classroom, in the community, and on the field of play,” said Kevin Cummings, Executive Director of the Bay State Games. “We are proud that this program has provided nearly $400,000 in aid to support the continuing education of these well deserving student-athletes that represent all regions of Massachusetts and many different sports.” This year’s six scholarship recipients are Akosua Adu-Gyamfi, Priya Bedard, Shannon Gustin, Keira Manning, Emilia Maria-Babcock, and Amelia Spencer. Akosua Adu-Gyamfi is a resident of Holden and attends the Winchendon School. At school, she plays on the varsity basketball team, where she is an active team leader. She played in the 2024 Bay State Games Girls Basketball Showcase on the Central team and won the DICK’S Sporting Goods Sportsmanship Award. Akosua started a Bible study club at her school and plays the piano. Outside of school, she is a childcare worker at a local elementary school and volunteers at the Akwabba Free Clinic in Worcester. She hopes to continue playing basketball in college while studying criminal justice with hopes of becoming a lawyer. Priya Bedard is a senior at Medway High School. At school, she is captain of the varsity softball team and plays on the varsity soccer and basketball teams. Priya competed in the 2024 Bay State Games Softball Showcase and was awarded the DICK’s Sporting Goods Sportsmanship Award for the Southeast team. She was selected as her school’s representative to attend the MIAA Leadership Conference. At school, Priya is a photographer for the school newspaper and volunteers for Relay for Life. She is currently completing an internship at the Innovation Center Pathways at Milford Regional Hospital. She volunteers at the Medway food pantry. After graduation, Priya plans to continue her academic and athletic career at the University of Hartford as a member of the softball team. Shannon Gustin is a senior at Rockland High School. She is ranked #11 in her class, sporting a 4.22 GPA through her junior year. Shannon is the Spirit Chair on the student council, which includes planning inclusion pep rallies, dances, spirit weeks and any other school spirit related event hosted at our school that bring us together as one “Bulldog Nation”. At school, she is also a member of the volleyball team, a founding member of her school’s DECA chapter and Vice President of Career Development, is a feature editor and writer for the RHS Veritas newspaper, and a secretary of Key Club. She was a founding member of the Women’s Empowerment Club at her school, which successfully was able to get feminine hygiene products installed in all the girl’s bathrooms at her school. Shannon is a high school sports and prom dress content creator as well. Shannon also competes in figure skating with the Winterland Skating School and has competed in Bay State Games Figure Skating competitions since 2016. Shannon plans on attending a 4-year university to study marketing and journalism to later work in the sports media field after graduation. Keira Manning is a native of Marlborough and attends the Advanced Math & Science Academy, where she plays field hockey and lacrosse. She is captain of her co-op field hockey team with Marlborough High School and is on the MIAA Student Advisory Committee. Within her school community, she is involved in a variety of clubs, including Leaders of Tomorrow, NHS, and Peer Mediation. She is a member of the Principal’s Council and is a Bay State Games Ambassador. Keira played for the Central team in the Bay State Games Field Hockey Showcase for 3 years. Keira is involved in the community through the Marlborough Public Library as a member of the Teen Advisory Board. She has won several leadership awards and attended leadership conferences all around the county, including being one of the four students from Massachusetts to be selected to attend the National Student Leadership Summit in Indianapolis this past summer. Keira plans to continue playing field hockey at Dickinson College after graduation while studying international studies or pre-law with hopes of attending law school. Emilia Maria-Babcock is a senior at Everett High School. She is ranked #6 in her class of 630 students with a 4.76 GPA. She is captain of the varsity basketball and soccer teams and plays softball at Everett High School. She played in the Bay State Games Girls Basketball Showcase for the Metro team twice, winning a silver medal in 2023 and gold in 2024. Emilia is the president of her class, in NHS and Spanish NHS, a student ambassador, and a member of Key Club. She has been presented with a National Women in Sports Leadership Award. When she’s not on the field or court, you can find Emilia playing the violin in the high school orchestra. Emilia is a youth basketball and softball coach and works as a sailing instructor. She hopes to become a physical therapist. Amelia Spencer is a native of Lynn and Winthrop and attends Winthrop High School. She holds a 4.3 GPA through her junior year. She has been president of her class for two years, is president of the student council, and was the sophomore class videographer. She is also a member of student government, debate club, math club, and wellness club. She is an MIAA Student Ambassador, Morgan’s Message Ambassador, and Bay State Games Ambassador. Athletically, she is captain of her school’s ice hockey and softball teams and played in the Bay State Games Girls Ice Hockey Showcase for 3 years, winning the gold medal each time. She is a Learn to Skate instructor, a Special Olympics volunteer, and completed an internship with the North Shore Navigators. Amelia was one of 4 students from Massachusetts to attend the National Student Leadership Summit in Indianapolis this past summer. In college, Amelia will continue to play NCAA Women’s Ice Hockey and will be studying special education and minoring in nutrition. Her dream job is to become an adaptive physical education teacher.
