Friday, July 8 2022

Game 1

Metro - 0

Northeast - 4


The first game of the 2022 Girls Ice Hockey Showcase was between Northeast and Metro. In the first period Northeast took the lead of the game going up 2-0 against Metro, Annie Biagini (Bolton, Algonquin Regional HS) and Ava Iantosca (Dedham, Dedham HS) scored the first 2 goals in the period less than 3 minutes apart from each other. Neither team got on the scoreboard during the 2nd period, then in the third Northeast’s Izzy Spencer (Westborough, Notre Dame Academy) scored 2 additional goals. Northeast took the first game of the tournament 4-0 over Metro.


Game 2

Southeast/Coastal  - 5

Central/West - 2


Southeast/Coastal took an early lead in the 1st period, with goals from Olivia Viens (North Grafton, Grafton HS), Riley King (Marston Mills, Barnstable HS), and Madison Leonard (Millbury, Auburn HS) in just over two minutes. Central/West was able to get on the board in the 2nd period with a goal scored by Skylar Smith (Dorset, Vt., Burr & Burton Academy). Southeast/Coastal matched them by scoring a goal of their own in the 2nd by Izzy Spencer (Westborough, Notre Dame Academy). In the 3rd period both teams scored  another goal each. Spencer scored her second goal of the game and Ava Saunders (Granby, Granby Jr/Sr HS) got on the board for Central/West, but was unable to close the lead. Southeast/Coastal won the game 5-2.


Game 3

Metro - 3

Central/West - 1


Both teams entered the game looking for the first win of the tournament. The game was an even matchup in the 1st period with each team scoring once. Metro's Mia Moretti (Medford, Matignon HS) got on the board first followed by Edith Hayes eight minutes later to even up the score for Central/West. Metro added 2 goals in the 2nd period, both goals scored by Devin Kelleher (Belmont, Belmont HS) to give Metro their first win.


Saturday, July 9

Game 4

Central/West - 2

Northeast - 5


Central/West got on the board first early with a goal from Edith Hayes 19 seconds into the game. Northeast's Abby Holmes (Winthrop/Wintrop HS) responded 5 minutes later to tie up the game. Regan Sullivan (Melrose, St. Mary's HS) scored 1:31 into the second to give Northeast a 2-1 lead. Penny Levine-Stein (Salem, Essex Agricultural & Technical HS) scored to extend Northeast's lead before Central/West's Skylar Smith (Dorset, Vt., Burr & Burton Academy) scored in the final minute of the period to make it 3-2 with one period to go. In the final period, Northeast extended their lead with a shorthanded goal from Talia Martucci (Winthrop, Winthrop HS) and a goal in the final minute of the game from Avalina Coffey (Winthrop, Winthrop HS).


Game 5

Southeast/Coastal - 3

Metro - 2


Metro took an early lead thanks to a goal from Alyssa Jankowski (Medford, Malden Catholic HS). Southeast/Coastal followed up with a goal of their own from Grace Holden (Centerville, Barnstable HS) to even the score at 1. Southeast/Coastal put the next two goals on the board in the second period. Both goals came from Holden to complete a natural hat trick. Metro came back with a goal from Angelina Gleicher (Lincoln, Lincoln-Sudbury Regional HS) with 8 minutes remaining in the game, but fell short of a comeback due to stellar goalkeeping by Erin Kral (Whitman, Notre Dame Academy). With the loss, Metro secured their spot in the bronze medal game.

Game 6

Northeast - 1

Southeast/Coastal - 1


In the final game of round robin, the top two teams to this point faced off. After a scoreless first period, Northeast got on the board first in the second period with a goal from Alexa Pepper (Winthrop, Winthrop HS). Southeast/Coastal came back with a goal of their own with 1:43 remaining in the period from Madison Leonard (Milbury, Auburn HS). Heading to the third period tied with the top seed on the line, both teams came out firing, but the score remained 1-1. Northeast committed some late penalties, but Southeast/Coastal was unable to take advantage, and the game ended in a 1-1 tie. After some tiebreakers were worked out, Northeast secured the top spot in the gold medal game and we set for a rematch against Southeast/Coastal.


Sunday, July 10

Bronze Medal Game

#4 Central/West - 2

#3 Metro - 8


The bronze medal game was filled with scoring throughout. Central/West took the early lead with a goal from Michaela Heiden (Guilford, Vt., Brattleboro Union HS). Metro's Alyssa Jankowski (Medford, Malden Catholic HS) responded a few minutes later to tie the score 1-1. Shortly after, Ava Saunders (Granby, Granby Jr/Sr HS) gave Central/West the lead before Metro came back to tie it again with a goal from Charlotte Wright (Belmont, Belmont HS). Going into the second period 2-2, Metro took the lead with a goal from Angelina Gleicher (Lincoln, Lincoln-Sudbury HS) with 7:51 remaining in the period. Bridget McAvoy (Melrose, Groton School) then extended Metro's lead with a goal two minutes later. Going into the third up 4-2, Metro continued adding to their lead with 4 more unanswered goals in the period. The goals were scored by Mikayla Holland (Malden, Malden Catholic HS), Gleicher, and two by Devin Kelleher (Belmont, Belmont HS). With the dominant performance in the third period, Metro took home the bronze medal. Central/West was awarded the Sportsmanship Award presented by DICK'S Sporting Goods for displaying excellent sportsmanship throughout the tournament.


Gold Medal Game

#2 Southeast/Coastal - 4

#1 Northeast - 5


Just like their previous matchup, the gold medal game between Northeast and Southeast/Coastal was competitive. Southeast/Coastal's Olivia Viens (North Grafton, Grafton HS) scored :44 seconds in the game. Northeast evened the score with :22 remaining in the period with a goal from Emma Holmes (Winthrop, Winthrop HS). In a score-heavy second period, Northeast added two goals in 20 seconds by Ali Spissler (Beverly, Essex Agricultural & Technical HS) and Tia Picardi (Saugus, St. Mary's HS). 17 seconds later, Southeast/Coastal closed the gap to 3-2 with a goal from Annie Biagini (Bolton, Algonquin Regional HS). Northeast then extended their lead 4-2 with a goal from Amelia Spencer (Winthrop, Winthrop HS) before Southeast/Coastal scored again by Ava Iantosca (Dedham, Dedham HS). The teams headed to third with Northeast up 4-3. In the final period, Northeast added to their lead with a goal from Zareena Sawyer (Winthrop, Winthrop HS) 25 seconds in. Southeast/Coastal's Kayla Leonard (Marshfield, Marshfield HS) scored with 11 minutes remaining to bring her team within one goal, but Northeast held tough to take the win for the gold medal 5-4. Southeast/Coastal won silver.

WOBURN (November 15, 2024) – The Bay State Games has selected six statewide scholarship recipients for the 2024 Future Leaders Scholarship Program. These student-athletes were selected from a large applicant pool after a process that included committee reviews of all applications and virtual interviews with selected applicants. These future leaders were selected based on their achievements and involvement in academics, community service, athletics, and leadership roles. The Bay State Games Future Leaders Scholarship program was established in 1989 and has since distributed nearly $400,000 in financial aid. Each of these high school seniors will receive a $1,000 scholarship for their first year of college. “Since its inception in 1989, the Future Leaders Scholarship Program has recognized outstanding high school students that excel in the classroom, in the community, and on the field of play,” said Kevin Cummings, Executive Director of the Bay State Games. “We are proud that this program has provided nearly $400,000 in aid to support the continuing education of these well deserving student-athletes that represent all regions of Massachusetts and many different sports.” This year’s six scholarship recipients are Akosua Adu-Gyamfi, Priya Bedard, Shannon Gustin, Keira Manning, Emilia Maria-Babcock, and Amelia Spencer. Akosua Adu-Gyamfi is a resident of Holden and attends the Winchendon School. At school, she plays on the varsity basketball team, where she is an active team leader. She played in the 2024 Bay State Games Girls Basketball Showcase on the Central team and won the DICK’S Sporting Goods Sportsmanship Award. Akosua started a Bible study club at her school and plays the piano. Outside of school, she is a childcare worker at a local elementary school and volunteers at the Akwabba Free Clinic in Worcester. She hopes to continue playing basketball in college while studying criminal justice with hopes of becoming a lawyer. Priya Bedard is a senior at Medway High School. At school, she is captain of the varsity softball team and plays on the varsity soccer and basketball teams. Priya competed in the 2024 Bay State Games Softball Showcase and was awarded the DICK’s Sporting Goods Sportsmanship Award for the Southeast team. She was selected as her school’s representative to attend the MIAA Leadership Conference. At school, Priya is a photographer for the school newspaper and volunteers for Relay for Life. She is currently completing an internship at the Innovation Center Pathways at Milford Regional Hospital. She volunteers at the Medway food pantry. After graduation, Priya plans to continue her academic and athletic career at the University of Hartford as a member of the softball team. Shannon Gustin is a senior at Rockland High School. She is ranked #11 in her class, sporting a 4.22 GPA through her junior year. Shannon is the Spirit Chair on the student council, which includes planning inclusion pep rallies, dances, spirit weeks and any other school spirit related event hosted at our school that bring us together as one “Bulldog Nation”. At school, she is also a member of the volleyball team, a founding member of her school’s DECA chapter and Vice President of Career Development, is a feature editor and writer for the RHS Veritas newspaper, and a secretary of Key Club. She was a founding member of the Women’s Empowerment Club at her school, which successfully was able to get feminine hygiene products installed in all the girl’s bathrooms at her school. Shannon is a high school sports and prom dress content creator as well. Shannon also competes in figure skating with the Winterland Skating School and has competed in Bay State Games Figure Skating competitions since 2016. Shannon plans on attending a 4-year university to study marketing and journalism to later work in the sports media field after graduation. Keira Manning is a native of Marlborough and attends the Advanced Math & Science Academy, where she plays field hockey and lacrosse. She is captain of her co-op field hockey team with Marlborough High School and is on the MIAA Student Advisory Committee. Within her school community, she is involved in a variety of clubs, including Leaders of Tomorrow, NHS, and Peer Mediation. She is a member of the Principal’s Council and is a Bay State Games Ambassador. Keira played for the Central team in the Bay State Games Field Hockey Showcase for 3 years. Keira is involved in the community through the Marlborough Public Library as a member of the Teen Advisory Board. She has won several leadership awards and attended leadership conferences all around the county, including being one of the four students from Massachusetts to be selected to attend the National Student Leadership Summit in Indianapolis this past summer. Keira plans to continue playing field hockey at Dickinson College after graduation while studying international studies or pre-law with hopes of attending law school. Emilia Maria-Babcock is a senior at Everett High School. She is ranked #6 in her class of 630 students with a 4.76 GPA. She is captain of the varsity basketball and soccer teams and plays softball at Everett High School. She played in the Bay State Games Girls Basketball Showcase for the Metro team twice, winning a silver medal in 2023 and gold in 2024. Emilia is the president of her class, in NHS and Spanish NHS, a student ambassador, and a member of Key Club. She has been presented with a National Women in Sports Leadership Award. When she’s not on the field or court, you can find Emilia playing the violin in the high school orchestra. Emilia is a youth basketball and softball coach and works as a sailing instructor. She hopes to become a physical therapist. Amelia Spencer is a native of Lynn and Winthrop and attends Winthrop High School. She holds a 4.3 GPA through her junior year. She has been president of her class for two years, is president of the student council, and was the sophomore class videographer. She is also a member of student government, debate club, math club, and wellness club. She is an MIAA Student Ambassador, Morgan’s Message Ambassador, and Bay State Games Ambassador. Athletically, she is captain of her school’s ice hockey and softball teams and played in the Bay State Games Girls Ice Hockey Showcase for 3 years, winning the gold medal each time. She is a Learn to Skate instructor, a Special Olympics volunteer, and completed an internship with the North Shore Navigators. Amelia was one of 4 students from Massachusetts to attend the National Student Leadership Summit in Indianapolis this past summer. In college, Amelia will continue to play NCAA Women’s Ice Hockey and will be studying special education and minoring in nutrition. Her dream job is to become an adaptive physical education teacher.
