COMPULSORY MOVES CHANGES

Bay State Games was informed by USFS that effective January 1, 2025 there will be new level and element requirements for Compulsory Move events that will be used for our event on January 4-5. The requirements can be found here. Please contact U.S. Figure Skating if there are any questions regarding these changes.

Registration for all USFS and ISI events will be online through credit card only. USFS events will use the EMS platform. ISI will use EntryEeze. 

*Athletes competing in both USFS and ISI must register and pay separately using the corresponding registration platform.


Early Bird Registration Deadline: November 8, 2024

Registration Deadline: December 2, 2024 OR when all ice time has been filled


The schedule will be posted the third week of December.

This is a USFS non-qualifying sanctioned event and an ISI endorsed event.

An athlete must meet at least one of the following guidelines:

  • A full-time resident of Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, or Vermont.
  • A full-time student at an academic institution in Massachusetts.
  • A registered member of a figure skating club in Massachusetts. Athletes entering under this eligibility can not be apart of a non Massachusetts club as well.

Athletes who are Massachusetts residents, full-time students in MA, or a member of a MA skating club will be classified as a participant from Massachusetts for the purpose of distribution of invitations for the State Games of America.



Athletes from Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island or Vermont, will be classified in the competition as a participant from their state of residency for the purpose of distribution of invitations for the State Games of America per eligibility Rule 4.



Age

Athletes must be a minimum of age 5 by the first date of competition to be eligible. 

  • ALL USFS EVENTS WILL BE JUDGED USING THE 6.0 SCORING SYSTEM
  • Athletes may skate in only one level per event.
  • Where offered, athletes may choose Excel (Restricted) OR Well Balanced (Unrestricted) but NOT both
  • Athletes may move up one level for both Freestyle and Short Program. This applies to USFS events only. 
  • Male and female athletes will not be combined in any event or division.
  • Athletes can enter up to three events

PLEASE NOTE: Many USFS Event elements are changing and some USFS events have been added or eliminated. The USFS portion of the 2024 Bay State Games Figure Skating competition will follow the element, time and event requirements in effect AS OF JANUARY 1, 2024. Refer to the USFS rulebook and webpage for details.




The following events will be offered:


Compete USA/Learn to Skate/ Basic Skills

  • Athletes may skate in only one level per event. Athletes may move up one level.
  • Skaters may compete in a total of 3 events 
  • Snowplow Sam – Basic 6 Program with Music
  • Aspire 1 – 4 with Music
  • Adult 1-6 Program with music
  • Snowplow Sam – Basic 6 Elements
  • Pre-Free Skate – Free Skate 1-6 Compulsory Moves
  • Excel Compulsory Moves
  • Adult 1-6, Beginner – Bronze Compulsory Moves

ISI Events


  • Freestyle (Level 1-9 and Adult)
  • Artistic Solo (Level 1-9 and Adult)
  • Open Freestyle (Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum)
  • Solo Compulsory (Pre Alpha – Delta)
  • Solo Programs (Pre-Alpha – Delta)

Skaters cannot participate in both Delta and FS1/Bronze events. If a skater has passed their FS1 or Bronze test, they can no longer compete in any Delta levels.



USFS Events


  • Pre-Preliminary can compete in Free Skate only. Athletes at this level can choose to compete in either Excel Preliminary or Well Balanced preliminary but NOT both.
  • Preliminary can compete in Free Skate only. Athletes at this level can choose to compete in Excel Preliminary, Excel Preliminary Plus or Preliminary Well Balanced but, may only compete in ONE.
  • Pre-Juvenile can compete in Free Skate only. Athletes at this level can choose to compete in Excel Pre-Juvenile Plus or Pre-Juvenile Well Balanced but, may only compete in ONE. Excel Pre-Juvenile has been discontinued. Per USFS Rules, as of January 1, 2024.
  • Juvenile can compete in Free Skate AND/OR Short Program. For Free Skate, athletes at this level can choose to compete in Excel Juvenile, Excel Juvenile Plus or Juvenile Well Balanced but, may only compete in ONE.
  • Intermediate can compete in Free Skate AND/OR Short Program. For Free Skate, athletes at this level can choose to compete in Excel Intermediate, Excel Intermediate Plus or Intermediate Well Balanced but, may only compete in ONE.
  • Novice can compete in Free Skate AND/OR Short Program. For Free Skate, athletes at this level can choose to compete in Excel Novice or Novice Well Balanced but, may only compete in ONE. There is no Plus level for Novice.
  • Junior can compete in Free Skate AND/OR Short Program. For Free Skate, athletes in Junior can compete in an Excel or Well Balanced program but may only compete in ONE. Short program is Well Balanced Only.
  • Senior can compete in Free Skate AND/OR Short Program. For Free Skate, athletes in Senior can compete in an Excel or Well Balanced program but may only compete in ONE. Short program is Well Balanced only.
  • Adult Gold, Adult Silver, and Adult Bronze can compete in Free Skate only. 
  • Master Senior, Master Junior, Master Novice, and Master Intermediate can compete in Free Skate only.

Bay State Games can change the level of a registered participant until the registration deadline. Bay State Games cannot add additional entrants once the competition is full. Athletes should register now at their current level. Once an athlete is registered, if they pass a test and move up a level, the athlete must contact the Bay State Games office at 781-932-6555 or via email at info@baystategames.org so we can update their registration and place them in the appropriate level. All levels will be determined as of December 2, 2024 at 11:59 p.m.

Athletes must list their coaches name and email address on their application. YOU MUST LIST THE COACHES NAME AS HE OR SHE IS REGISTERED WITH ISI or USFSA. Please check for maiden or married names and verify the correct name with your coach before submitting your application.


All coaches must be compliant as of the first date of competition. Coaches who are not compliant will not receive their credential and not be allowed to enter the competition area. 

Athlete Pizza Party

When: Saturday, January 4

Where: TBA

Time:   6:30pm - 7:30pm


All athletes are invited to a complimentary pizza party (pizza, soda and cookies) on January 4, prior to the skating show. The dinner will begin at 6:30pm. At 7pm, awards will be presented for the Banner Contest. At 7:15pm, all athletes will proceed to the show for the athlete procession. Athletes not attending the show must be picked up from the field house by 7:15pm. Each athletes id card which they will receive at check-in will get them entry into the pizza party. 


Banner Contest

Theme: Ringing in the New Year!

Each skating club is encouraged to bring a banner to the Athlete Party held at Location TBA on Saturday, January 4 at 6:30pm. Banners will be judged during the evening and the clubs with the top-three banners will receive awards. All banners must be limited to no more than 3 ft. high by 10 ft. wide.

Location: Williams College Ice Rink   

Time: 7:30pm (doors open at  7pm)


The cost is $10 per person. Family members and general spectators must purchase tickets to be admitted to the show. Each athlete will be allowed entrance to the show with their athlete ID Badge. Parents and family members may not use a skater’s ID badge to gain access to show and must buy a ticket. Tickets will be available for sale at the registration table on all competition days. Participants who pre-paid for show tickets when they registered on line will pick up their tickets when they check in for competition registration. 


Athlete Procession

To kick off the Bay State Skate Show, all Bay State Games athletes who are attending the skating show will march into the Williams College Rink and be ushered to a special seating area where they will watch the show. Leading the procession will be the medal winners from Saturday Bay State Games events. Athletes should wear their medals and ID badge to the athlete assembly. Additional details on show assembly will be included in the Finalist Letter which each participant will receive approximately two weeks prior to the competition.


Show Performers

The Bay State Games Figure Skating show will feature Gold medal winning athletes from the Saturday competition in selected ISI and USFS events. The list of events that will be selected for the show will be posted in the Finalist Letter which each participant will receive approximately two weeks prior to the competition.

2026 State Games of America hosted by Keystone State Games

The 2025 Bay State Games Figure Skating competition serves as a qualifier for the 2026 State Games of America. All medalists (gold, silver, and bronze) in this event will qualify for the 2026 State Games of America in State College, PA. The competition will be held TBA.


The 2026 State Games of America will be hosted by the Keystone State Games and Happy Valley Sports.
