Rules I Winners I Application

The Future Leaders Scholarship, which awards six $2000 college scholarships to Bay State Games participants, aims to identify young men and women who will be tomorrow’s leaders. The Massachusetts Amateur Sports Foundation is proud to award these scholarships to six student-athletes who demonstrate leadership through community service, academic excellence and athletic achievement.

Over the past 20 years, more than $200,000 has been distributed to students who wish to continue their education. Past recipients have gone on to successful careers at prestigious institutions including Boston College, Colby College, Dartmouth College, Harvard University, Princeton University, Providence College, Stanford University, Trinity College, Tufts University, University of Notre Dame, University of Pennsylvania and Wake Forest University.

The Massachusetts Amateur Sports Foundation awards these scholarships because it believes the true value of athletic participation lies not in the outcome, but in the lessons learned. Sports teach responsibility to self and to others, foster a sense of self-worth and develop an appreciation for the importance of setting goals and working to achieve them. If learned well, these lessons help make effective leaders - in business, education and the community.

RULES

ELIGIBILITY
Applicants must be:
- A Junior (11th grader) at any Massachusetts secondary school as of the 2010-2011 academic year, regardless of state of residence OR a Massachusetts resident who is a Junior (11th grader), even if he or she attends school out-of-state.
- Registered and agree to participate in the 2011 Bay State Winter Games or Summer Games at every level for which he/ she qualifies (tryouts, qualifiers, finals). You DO NOT need to make the Finals or be on a Final Roster to qualify.

APPLICATION PROCESS
Please do not staple any part of the application materials
Materials:
The applicant must provide the following in one envelope:
- Completed application form.
- Personal statements typed on separate paper.
- Recommendation from coach or athletic director in a sealed envelope.
- Recommendation from a guidance counselor, teacher or principal in a sealed envelope.
- Official school transcript including the first half of the 2010-11 academic year.
Recommendations:
- Recommendations should be typed, one page in length, signed by author and sealed in an envelope.
- Recommendations should address the applicant’s demonstrated leadership abilities and achievements. It should give a clear sense of what qualities make the applicant unique and deserving of the Future Leaders Scholarship.

CRITERIA
Scholarships will be awarded to six students, two from each of three regions of the state:
Region 1: Metro/Northeast Region 2: Southeast/Coastal Region 3: Central/West
Regions will be determined by the location of the student’s permanent residence. If a student resides out-of-state, his/her region will be determined by the location of the educational institution that he/she attends.

Bay State Games will verify with entry records that all scholarship entrants have participated in or registered for the 2011 Bay State Winter Games or the 2011 Bay State Summer Games.
The selection process will begin with a review of each applicant’s personal statements, written recommendations and transcript. From each region, six finalists- three male and three female - will be chosen for personal interviews.

DEADLINE
The Entry Deadline is Wednesday, June 8.
Finalists will be notified by June 14 and interviews will be held June 20, 21 & 22.
June 20 - Metro Boston/Northeast; June 21 - Southeast/Coastal; June 22 - Central/West

AWARDS & PAYMENT
All scholarship winners will be notified by Friday, June 24.
