The Bay State Games Hall of Fame was created in 2001 to achieve two major goals. The first was to recognize Bay State Games athletic alumni who have gone onto prestigious and successful collegiate, professional or Olympic careers. The second was to recognize former and current coaches, officials, sports organizers, volunteers, venues and organizations that have made significant contributions to the Bay State Games throughout its history. This unique format of recognizing athletes as well as those who have played a significant role in the Games' success has resulted in an impressive list inductees.

Class of 2010

BAY STATE GAMES HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES

Class of 2001

MELISSA MULLOY-MECOZZI
Melissa was the first athlete inducted into the Bay State Games Hall of Fame. Growing up in Middleton, Massachusetts Melissa was a long time Bay State Games participant and won multiple gold medals in the sport of shooting. Melissa had great success in the sport of Shooting at an early age competing in the National Junior Olympic Championship as a 14 years old where she had the highest qualifying score despite competing against athlete that were up to three years older. Upon completing High School, Melissa attended the University of Alaska-Fairbanks on a shooting scholarship where she won multiple NCAA championships. After college, Melissa won a spot on the 2000 US Olympic Shooting Team and competed in the Women Small Bore Rifle in Sydney, Australia.

CHARLIE BUTTERFIELD
Charlie Butterfield has served as Bay State Games Track & Field Commissioner since 1984. Charlie over-sees one of the largest participant sports of any event in the Games coordinating four regional qualifiers and a finals competition for over 700 athletes annually. The past success of Bay State Games track and field is due in great part to Charlie’s efforts coordinating officials, compiling qualifier results for the finals and a host of other responsibilities that go into a successful track event. Charlie is a former high school teacher and coach who remains active in track events serving in board roles for the Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association, the Massachusetts Track Officials Association and the Central Mass Track & Field Officials organization. Charlie currently operates his own timing and finish line management company called Time Out Productions.

ROB GARON
Rob has the rare distinction of being involved in every Bay State Summer Games event since their inception in 1982. Rob has served as Swimming Commissioner and Swimming Finals Meet Director for 27 years. A former college swimmer who currently serves as a swimming officials and mentor for swimmers throughout Massachusetts, Rob has been the back bone of the Bay State Games Swimming competition. His dedication to the Games is exemplary and any success that Bay State Games Swimming has achieved over the years is due in great part to his efforts.

BARBARA CECE
Barbara Cece has been the Bay State Winter Games Figure Skating competition commissioner since the Winter Games were founded in 1985. Barb is part of the original group that brought the Winter Games to Williamstown and the Berkshires. She is a member of the Winter Games Organizing Committee and the former president of the Christmasbrook Figure Skating Club. Barb’s entire family is dedicated to the sport of figure skating and the Bay State Games. Both daughters were active competitors in Bay State Games and have moved onto become coaches of athletes at the Games. Barb was the first Bay State Winter Games volunteer or athlete to be inducted into the Bay State Games Hall of Fame.

LEDA LEVINE
Leda Levine was involved with Bay State Games Field Hockey since the inception of the sport in the Games in 1984. In addition to serving as a coach at the Games, Leda also served as the Summer Games field hockey competition commissioner for fourteen years., She is the founder and creator of the Bay State Games 6 v 6 Field Hockey competition which has developed into one of the more popular team sport events offered at the Games. In addition to her involvement with the Bay State Games, Leda also served many key roles on field hockey committees with the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association and USA Field Hockey. 

REGGIE LEWIS
The late Reggie Lewis was a two-time Bay State Games gold medal winner as a member of the 1985 and 1986 Metro Mens Open Basketball competition while a student-athlete at Northeastern University. After an outstanding career at Northeastern, Reggie became the #1 draft pick of the Boston Celtics in 1987. He played for the Celtics from 1987 to 1993, was named captain of the Celtics and was a member of the NBA all star team in 1992. Reggie remained a supporter of the Bay State Gamesspeaking at Opening Ceremonies events and giving back to Massachusetts athletes as an exemplary role model. Lewis died unexpectedly in 1993 of sudden cardiac death during an off season basketball practice. The Reggie Lewis legacy with the Games continues today as the Bay State Games Juniors Basketball tournament is held at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center each Summer.

REBECCA LOBO
Rebecca is a two time Bay State Games gold medal winner as a member of the West Girls Scholastic Basketball team representing Southwick-Tolland Regional High School. She went onto lead the University of Connecticut Womens Basketball team to a 35-0 record and a NCAA Championship during her senior year in 1995. She was also named the Womens player of the year in 1995. Rebecca was the youngest member of the 1996 US Olympic Womens Basketball Team which won the gold medal in Atlanta, Georgia. Rebecca joined the WNBA for its inaugural season in 1977 and played for seven seasons in the WNBA for New York, Houston and Connecticut. Since retired Rebecca now serves as an analyst for ESPN for womens college basketball and the WNBA.

TOM LYNCH
Tom Lynch has been an integral part of the Bay State Games ice hockey competition since it’s inception in the mid-eighties. Lynch oversees the recruitment and assigning of all volunteer officials for Bay State games ice hockey. The success of Bay State Games ice hockey is due in great part to his efforts. Tom is very well respected within the National Ice Hockey Officials Association. He served as NIHOA Secretary-Treasurer from 1981 until 1993 and represented NIHOA at the NCAA Rules Meetings from 1981 through 1997. The Games have been able to form an outstanding relationship with Massachusetts Ice Hockey officials due to the leadership and support of Tom Lynch.

JIM UNDERWOOD
Jim Underwood began his involvement with Bay State Games soccer in 1982, the very first year of the Games. He started off coaching before moving upward to be the sports commissioner, overseeing the entire soccer competition. Underwood has dedicated over 20 years of service to the Games and has been one of the Bay State Games staunchest supporters. The long term success of soccer at the Bay State Games is due in great part to Jim’s efforts and dedication to the Games.

JIM PEDRO
Jim Pedro began participating in the Bay State Games as a wrestler. He then moved onto the sport of Judo where he became a four time member of the US Olympic Judo team competing in Barcelona-92, Atlanta-96, Sydney-2000 and Greece-2004. In 1996, Pedro won a Bronze medal at the Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. Pedro has been a long time supporter of the Bay State Games actively promoting Judo at the Bay State Games, Serving as meet director and hosting the Games judo competition at his facility in Wakefield, Massachusetts.

JEANNE KING
Jeanne King served as a dedicated volunteer to the Bay State Games for over 15 years. King has over-seen regional qualifying events, served as a site director, participated on scholarship review boards and been part of numerous organizing committees. Jeanne was the first non sport-specific volunteer to be inducted into the Bay State Games Hall of Fame.

UMASS BOSTON
The campus of UMass Boston has served as a primary venue for Bay State Games events for over 18 years. Year after year UMass Boston hosts a larger number of practices and tryouts in addition to hosting the most sports of any venue during the Bay State Games finals. The loyalty shown to the Games by UMass Boston has been a tremendous asset throughout the years and has been critical in running a successful competition. UMass Boston was the first facility to be inducted into the Bay State Games Hall of Fame.

Class of 2005

KELLY DOSTAL
Kelly Dostal competed in the Bay State Games in Field Hockey as a member of the West Girls Scholastic team. In 2000 as an 11th grader, Kelly was selected for the Bay State Games / Verizon Future Leaders Scholarship Award. In high school, Kelly was a two time All-American and lead Smith Academy to a 22-0 record and a state championship. In four years at Wake Forest University, Dostal lead the Demon Deacons to a combined record of 78-10, four consecutive NCAA Final Four appearances, two ACC regular season championships, two ACC tournament titles and three consecutive NCAA National Championships. In 2004, Kelly was named the NCAA National Field Hockey player of the year. Kelly was also a member of the 2001 and 2005 USA Field Hockey National team. She currently serves as an assistant coach for the UMass Amherst Womens Field Hockey team.  

LOUISE WING
Louise Wing has participated in the Bay State Games Synchronized Swimming competition for 24 years. She began competing in the sport in her mid 50’s and continues to compete today at the age of 89. Louise has amassed over thirty medals at the Bay State Games. She has also coached and judged at the Bay State Games for over two decades. Wing’s accomplishments are not limited to the Games. She has won 28 national solo titles and has competed in World Championships in Brazil, Denmark and England. In 2004, she was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in Florida. She was also named the 2004 National Congress of State Games Female Athlete of the Year, making her the first Bay State Games athlete to ever be presented with this award.

JIM MAHER
Jim Maher of Dedham has served numerous roles with the Bay State Games Wrestling competition for 23 years including coach, commissioner and tournament director. While involved with the Games, Jim also served as a wrestling coach at Randolph and Brockton High Schools for 16 years where he was selected as the Boston Globe Coach of the year in 1990 and won the Division I State Championship at Randolph High School in 1991. Jim has received numerous recognition awards including induction into the Randolph High School Hall of Fame in 1998 and into the Massachusetts Wrestling Coaches Hall of Fame in 2002. Jim has worked for Verizon for 25 years and  serves as Park & Recreation Commissioner and Youth Wrestling coach for the town of Dedham.

DIANE WILCOX
Diane Wilcox has volunteered at every Bay State Games competition held since their inception in 1982. Diane has worked at both the Summer and Winter Games in numerous roles. Diane is a Tufts University graduate where she was a three sports athlete competing in field hockey, indoor track and lacrosse. She currently serves on the board of directors of the Jumbo Club, the Tufts University Athletic Alumni Association. Diane currently works for Communities for People, a Residential Program for Teenagers. In addition to her involvement with the Games, Diane has worked on an impressive array of events including Olympic Games in Atlanta, Salt Lake, Sydney and Greece.

DOUG ARNOT
Doug Arnot launched the Bay State Games in 1982 and served as Executive Director of the organization for ten years. Doug also founded the National Congress of State Games, a national organization representing State Games programs across the country, and served as the organizations first president. Upon leaving the Bay State Games, Arnot served as part of the Senior Management team for the 1994 Soccer World Cup hosted in the United States. He then served as Director of Venues and Operations for the 1996 Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta, Georgia and later served as Director of Operations at the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah. He currently serves as a member of the management teams for the Chicago 2016 Olympic Bid.

DANA BARROS
Dana Barros grew up in Boston, Massachusetts and attended Xaverian Brothers High School in Westwood. Dana participated on the Bay State Games Mens Open Basketball Metro team for two seasons, winning the Gold medal both years. Dana went onto a very successful career at Boston College where he became the first player in BC basketball history to score over 2000 career points, led the Big East Conference in scoring for two seasons and received Big East All Conference Honors for three consecutive years. After College, Dana was drafted as the 16th pick by the Seattle Supersonics. He played 13 seasons in the NBA with Seattle, Philadelphia, Boston and Detroit. As a pro player, Dana led the NBA in three point field goal percentage in 1992, was voted the NBA’s most improved player in 1995 and participated in the 1995 NBA All-Star Game. Dana also holds the NBA record for most consecutive games hitting at least one three-pointer with 89.

ATHLETIC TRAINERS OF MASSACHUSETTS
(Brian Fitzgerald, Jeff Stone and Diane Sartanowicz)

Since the inception of the Bay State Games in 1982, the Athletic Trainers of Massachusetts (ATOM) have been an essential supporter of the organization. ATOM members, including certified athletic trainers and student trainers, have volunteered their services each year to provide competitors in the Bay State Summer Games with top quality medical care. Three representatives selected to receive this award on ATOM’s behalf are Diane Sartanowicz, Jeff Stone and Brian Fitzgerald. Diane Sartanowicz is the past president of  ATOM and has served as Bay State Games medical coordinator for the last 8 years. She is the Athletic Trainer at the Fessenden School in West Newton, MA. Jeff Stone has been involved with the Bay State Games in many capacities for over 20 years. He was Medical Director from 1989-91, athletic trainer at over 22 different sports/venues, track coach and official, site director and sports director. The Head Athletic Trainer at Suffolk University in Boston, Stone is presently the District One Director for the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA) Board of Directors. Brian Fitzgerald has been involved with the Bay State Games medical team since 1982. The former Head Athletic Trainer at Boston State College and UMass-Boston, he presently is the Coordinator of Sports Medicine for the Children’s Hospital Sports Medicine Division, which helps supports the Bay State Games medical programs. He is also the Director of Sports Medicine Services for the US Figure Skating Association.

RICH MORAN
Rich has volunteered at the Bay State Games for the last 17 years, serving as campus director at UMass Boston since the inception of events being held on campus. Moran is a long time health and physical education teacher and also served in the US Army for eight years. He has coached at the high school level for 11 years in numerous sports. Rich is a graduate of UMass Boston and a collegiate athlete.

NANCY KERRIGAN
Nancy Kerrigan participated in the first ever Bay State Games figure skating competition in 1985 where she won a gold medal. Nancy went onto become one of the most successful female skaters in US Figure Skating history. She competed in six US championships finishing first in 92-93 and second in 91-92. Nancy competed in three world championships finishing second in 91-92 and third in 90-91. Nancy also competed in two Olympic Games winning Bronze at the 92 Games in Albertville, France and Silver at the 94 Games in Lillehammer. Since retiring from active competition Nancy has appeared in a variety of skating show, movies and television appearances.

DAVID MARCUS
David is a vital part of the Summer Games Table Tennis program and helped to bring the sport to the Games. He has served as tournament director for every table tennis competition held at the Games. In addition to his involvement with the Games, David runs numerous tournaments locally, nationally and internationally. He also developed and maintains Rating Central, a free service that provides rating of table tennis players from across the world. 

JOE CACCIATORE
Joe Cacciatore is the assigner for all Bay State Games Baseball umpires and has held this position since the inception of Baseball at the Bay State Games over 15 years ago. Cacciatore is extremely involved in athletics serving as the head boys basketball coach at Waltham High School and assigner of football officials at numerous levels. As a baseball umpire, Joe has umpired at all levels of college baseball, the NCAA division I regional championships and the Cape Cod League. Joe is a staple at the Games and it is due to his continued efforts that baseball has become such a prominent college recruiting showcase for amateur baseball players in Massachusetts.

BRUCE MCANDREWS
Bruce McAndrews is an essential part of the Bay State Winter Games. McAndrews has been involved with the Winter Games for almost twenty years as a member of the organizing committee. His involvement with the Games began when he was recruited by the Adams Chamber of Commerce when the cross country skiing competition was held at Mt Greylock and it has been a labor of love ever since. Bruce coordinates all aspects of the winter games in the Northern Berkshire region of Massachusetts including operations, volunteers, promotions and sponsorship. He is a recent retiree of Smith Brothers-McAndrews Insurance where he served as president.

SARAH BEHN
Sarah was a participant in the Bay State Games basketball competition in both the scholastic and open divisions. As a high school player at Foxboro High School Sarah was a two sport All American in both Soccer and Basketball and is the 2nd leading scorer in Massachusetts State History with 2,562 points. Sarah went onto Boston College where she was a Kodak All-American and remains the all time women’s leading scorer in Big East Conference Womens Basketball history. She is the first women’s player in Boston College history to have her number retired. After college Sarah played in the European League and then went onto coaching at both the high school and collegiate level.

MIKE BURNS
As a student at Marlborough High School in the mid 1980’s Mike Burns participated in the Bay State Games as a member of the Central Boys Scholastic Soccer Team. Mike went onto play at Hartwick College and also competed internationally as a member of the 1987 U16 FIFA World Cup team and the 1989 U-20 World Cup team. Mike competed for the US Men’s soccer team in the 1992 Olympic Games as well as the FIFA World Cup where he was a non-playing squad member in 1994 and then played in 1998. Mike played in the MLS professional Soccer League from 1996-2002 for three different teams including the New England Revolution, San Jose Earthquakes and Kansas City Wizards. Mike was named Director of Soccer for the New England Revolution in 2005.

JOE CHIRICO
Joe has served as Commissioner for the Bay State Games Diving competition for more than 20. Joe is founder and head coach of Boston Area Diving a well established area diving team since 1979. Joe has won numerous All American coaching honors and has lead US national level teams to Europe, Canada, Mexico, China and the World Championships in Sydney Australia. Joe has coached at several area colleges, serves as Vice President of Junior Diving on the Board of Directors for USA Diving and is the National Chairperson for AAU Diving.

RACHEL WOO
Rachel has served as the coordinator of officials for the Bay State Games Soccer since the late 90”s and prior to that volunteered as an official. Rachel is now one of only four women in the United States appointed to the FIFA International Panel of Referees. She has refereed matches in Portugal, Germany, China and Canada. Since 1998 she is certified to work NCAA final four matches. Rachel continues to promote soccer as a staff member of Massachusetts Youth Soccer.

BILL GUERIN
Growing up in Wilbraham, Massachusetts, Bill Guerin participated in the very first Bay State Games ice hockey competition in the mid 1980’s as a member of the West Boys Scholastic team. He played in the Bay sState Games for two years and won the gold medal both years.  Bill went on to play at Boston College and became the fifth over-all pick in the 1989 NHL draft. Bill has had a 17 year NHL career that has included stints with the New Jersey Devils, Edmonton Oilers, Boston Bruins, Dallas Stars, St Louis Blues, San Jose Sharks, NY Islanders and Pittsburg Penguins. Bill won the Stanley Cup with the NJ Devils in 1995 and the Pittsburg Penquins in 2009. He also played in several NHL All Star Games, being voted  MVP of the 2001 All Star Game. In addition to his pro career, Bill has played on the US Olympic Men’s Hockey Teams in 1998, 2002 and 2006, winning the silver medal in 2002. He was also a member of the USA team that won the World Cup Championship in 1996.

ANN WELCH
Ann Welch has served as a dedicated volunteer at the Bay State Games for over 20 years. Ann has been a fixture at Bay State Games Track & Field qualifiers and finals events handling registration, results and other volunteer roles. Ann has also been part of the Verizon Future Leaders Scholarship Program for over 15 years serving on scholarship interview committees, helping to coordinate interview locations and other duties. Ann has volunteered at the Winter Games as well.

BOB McCORRY
Bob McCorry has served as Commissioner for the Bay State Games Shooting competition since the inception of Shooting in the Games over 25 years ago. He has worked diligently to promote the sport of shooting throughout Massachusetts and has helped to develop several disciplines in the Games including Rifle, Pistol and Trap. Approximately 2 dozen Bay state Games alumni have gone onto participate in the Olympic Games. Three of these Bay State Olympic Alumni are Shooters, the most of any Bay State Summer Games sport. This is a credit to the efforts of Bob who works hard to promote the Games to all levels of athletes from novice to future Olympian.  In addition to his involvement with the Games, Bob helps promote shooting sports to youth through the state.

PETER BUXTON
Peter Buxton has been a staunch supporter of the Bay State Games for over 20 years. He first became involved with the Games in the mid 80’s when he served as an executive for New England Telephone and they became a sponsor of the Games. He then became a board member and later was voted as chairmen of the board. Peter is the longest sitting board chair in the history of the organization serving in this capacity for over a dozen years. Peter has played a key role in developing  funding initiatives and organizational procedures for the organization.  He has served as a member of the Bay State Games Scholarship committee and has even participated in the Games in the open division of the 7 v 7 soccer tournament.

JACK ABORN
Jack Aborn served as commissioner of the Bay State Games archery competition and was instrumental in the addition of archery which has been a sport in the Summer Games for over 15 years. Jack was a dedicated worker and very strong supporter of the Bay State Games. He organized all phases of the sport from venues, to equipment, judges and volunteers. Jack was a very strong proponent of youth participation in archery and always went out of his way to try to attract more youth participants to the sport of archery. Jack was heavily involved in archery both nationally and locally. He was a nationally ranked archery official and also served as a board member of the State Archery Association of Massachusetts. Jack passed away unexpectedly in 2007 and a youth scholarship program created for youth participants who compete in the Bay State Games archery program is named in his honor.

JIM FANNING
Jim Fanning has served as commissioner of the Bay State Games softball program since its inception 15 years ago. Jim plays a critical role in coordinating all of the umpires needed to officiate the games. All officials at the games are volunteers and Jim does a tremendous job securing umpires during their busy time of the year. Jim is co-founder of the Cambridge Girls Softball league, has served as umpire in chief of the Metro Boston Amateur Softball Association (ASA) since 2000, and has served as an ASA umpire clinician since 1998. He was chairman of the 2008 ASA National Umpire School, currently serves as the ASA Massachusetts At Large Player Rep and recently received the Amateur Softball Association of America Region One 25 year service award. Jim has umpired high level softball around the world including three ASA National Championships, at the NCAA Division 1, 2 and 3 levels, at the 2009 Men’s European Cup Championship, the 2010 Women’s European Cup Championships and for the National Professional Fast Pitch League.

PATTY FLANAGAN
Patty Flanagan has been involved with the Bay State Games synchronized swimming competition in several capacities for many years. Synchronized Swimming has been part of the Bay State Games for over 25 years and Patty has played a vital role with the success of the sport in the Summer Games. As synchronized swimming commissioner, Patty handles all phases of the competition from coordinating the venue, setting the format, organizing the judges and all of the many details that go into putting on a successful event. Patty is heavily involved in synchronized swimming, serving as a certified coach of the Worcester YMCA Synchromaids and is also a certified national official having recently judged the 2010 United States Collegiate Championships. She also serves as program director for the Central Mass YWCA.
